Ingredients
Scale
- 1 lb. ground pork sausage (see notes below for options)
- ¼ teaspoon crushed red pepper
- ¼ cup butter
- ¼ cup all-purpose flour
- 2 cups milk
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ¼ teaspoon onion powder
- ¼ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
- 1 (8-count) tube refrigerated biscuits, such as Pillsbury Grands
- 6 large eggs
- ¼ cup heavy cream
- 2 cups shredded Colby or cheddar cheese
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with butter or nonstick spray—don’t be shy, darling, this helps with that glorious golden crust.
- Brown the sausage in a skillet over medium heat, breaking it up with a spoon. Stir in the crushed red pepper during the last few minutes. When fully cooked and no longer pink, set it aside.
- In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium-low heat. Whisk in the flour and cook, whisking constantly, until the mixture turns golden and smells delightfully nutty—about 1-2 minutes.
- Slowly whisk in the milk, followed by the salt, onion powder, and black pepper. Keep whisking until your gravy becomes thick and smooth. Fold in ½ cup of the cooked sausage for extra savoriness.
- Cut the biscuits into quarters and scatter them evenly across the bottom of the greased baking dish.
- Layer it up: Top the biscuits with the rest of the sausage, then sprinkle on half of the shredded cheese.
- In a mixing bowl, whisk the eggs with the heavy cream. Pour this custardy mixture gently over the casserole.
- Pour the gravy evenly over everything. Sprinkle with the remaining cheese for a golden, melty crown.
- Bake uncovered for 30–35 minutes, or until puffed, golden brown, and the eggs are fully set. Let it rest for 5 minutes before slicing into squares and serving warm.
Notes
- For extra heat, use spicy ground pork sausage or add more crushed red pepper.
- Mix different cheeses like Colby, cheddar, and Monterey Jack for a richer flavor.
- For a vegetarian option, replace the pork sausage with veggie sausage crumbles, mushrooms, or bell peppers.
- To save time, you can use pre-made sausage gravy or biscuit dough, though making everything from scratch adds a fresh, flavorful touch.
